Chiloe whale watching tour. Chiloé is a large island, located in the north-western corner of the vast territory called Patagonia. The surrounding seas are very productive and its dramatic coastline is affected by the nutrient-rich waters of the north-bound Humboldt Current, hence its rich diversity of seabirds and marine mammals.
On this dedicated itinerary we will have ample opportunities to study and photograph a great array of seabirds, including Humboldt and Magellanic Penguins, Flightless Steamer-Duck, Kelp Goose, and Peruvian Pelican. While exploring the rugged coast we will have great chances of interesting marine mammals such as Peale’s and Chilean Dolphins, Marine Otter and large numbers of South American Sea Lion.
The highlight of this tour is a pelagic trip aim to find the recently-split Pygmy Blue Whale, which regularly occurs around the archipelago during the southern summer months (December through early March); Humpback Whales are often see as well as a great diversity of tubenoses such as Black-browed Albatross, Southern Giant Petrel, Pink-footed and Sooty Shearwaters and the poorly-known Little (Subantarctic) Shearwater, which probably breeds along this remote, heavily forested part of the island.
If you are a pelagic birder or a dedicated whale-watcher or photographer, this trip is for you!
