Tierra del Fuego—“Land of Fire”—was named by Ferdinand Magellan during his exploration of this remote and untamed region more than 500 years ago. Its original inhabitants, the Fuegians, knew the island as Karukinka and lived here for millennia before the arrival of Western settlers in the early twentieth century.
This itinerary is dedicated to exploring the nature and landscapes of Karukinka, combining its cultural history with its remarkable biodiversity and diverse ecosystems.
You will navigate the Strait of Magellan in search of dolphins and seabirds, cross the windswept steppe alongside herds of guanacos and flocks of Upland Geese, and visit the King Penguin colony at Useless Bay. The program also includes exploration of sub-Antarctic forests in search of the Magellanic Woodpecker and a journey into the southern Andes to discover the pristine fjords and glaciers of the Darwin Range. In this remote region, there will be opportunities to observe Black-browed Albatross breeding colonies and, with some luck, Leopard Seals and Southern Elephant Seals.
