Detailed Itinerary and Activities
Ushuaia … the world’s southermost city, the end of the world, the main gateway to Antarctica! There are some many ways to refer this charming town and its incredible maritime and mountain setting.
On this easy nature trip you will be able to explore its dramatic and pristine surroundings as well as to discover its wildlife riches. You will be met at Ushuaia airport (or port) and have an assisted transfer to your chosen hotel. You will have a leisure free afternoon to explore Ushuaia on your own, visiting its interesting museums or walk the easy trails nearby. The Beagle Channel coast is very productive to get familiar with the local birdlife which abounds.
Overnight at Ushuaia. Hotel options are: Hotel Albatros, Hotel de Los Andes and Hotel Las Hayas (No meals)
This is a group excursion. You will be picked up at your hotel and transferred to Ushuaia’s port. From here you will board a spacious catamaran and sail the waters of the Beagle Channel on an easterly direction. Just a few miles from Ushuaia, the boat will slow down at Les Eclereurs island and its famous lighthouse. There are many nesting seabirds in these islets including South American Tern, Kelp Goose, Dolphin Gull and we will pay attention on the South American Sea Lions and Southern Fur Seals visiting these rocks to rest. Occasionally you can see the odd-looking Snowy Sheathbill here as well as Black Cinclodes (recently being split from Blackish Cinclodes).
As we travel eastwards, there are great chances o spotting Peale’s Dolphin and pelagic seabirds including Back-browed Albatross, Southern Giant Petrel and Magellanic Diving-Petrel. Later, we will get to Martillo Island and its penguin breeding colonies. Here we will have the unique chance of seeing Magellanic and Gentoo Penguins breeding together; Occasionally King Penguins can be seen resting among its smaller cousins.
By noontime, we will reach the sheltered bay of Estancia Harberton. This fascinating site holds an amazing part of the history (and pre-history) of southern Tierra del Fuego. The history of missionary Thomas Bridges and his family and the connection with the last Fuegians, the natives of Tierra del Fuego, is certainly moving and you can learn more by reading before-hand one of the most inspiring account written by his son Lucas on the classic “Uttermost Part of the Earth”. We will have plenty of time to explore the facilities of this farm, the cemetery and the visitor center, which contains an interesting museum with a large collection of marine mammal skulls and skeletons. We will head back to Ushuaia by bus, enjoying the mountains, the sea views and the tall beech forests which cover this part of the island.
