Chile, a thin and long country that extends along the Pacific coast of South America for more than 4,000 km, is the longest country in the world on a North-South direction, but quite narrow from east to west. This geographical fact has played a major part in shaping the country’s diverse landscapes, and makes it a wonderful destination for the restless traveller who wants to experience places as contrasting as the driest desert in the world and the lush sub Antarctic temperate rainforest in a few day’s time, or being able to be in the heart of the Andes in the morning and enjoy the sunset in the seashore by evening.
A trip to Chile starts in the capital city, Santiago, where chances are you’ll be flying in from abroad. From here you can start visiting the central part of the country, a Mediterranean type of land with nice, moderate weather. Central Chile (Regions of Valparaíso, Santiago, O’Higgins and Maule). This is the heart of the country, where the main cities, fruit and wine valleys, vineyards, seaside resorts and some of the best skiing in the Southern Hemisphere are all placed.
From here you can go to either northern or southern Chile (or both, why not?).
Northern Chile has the driest desert in the world, archaeological ruins and the high Andean plateau with its unique wildlife and vast-scale landscape.
Southern Chile includes the lush and ever-green Lake District, a land of ancient forests, snow-capped volcanoes, lakes, rivers and the mythical Chiloé island.
Austral Chile is part of the vast region known as Patagonia, a land of legend and adventure that still lures explorers from everywhere, and a gateway to Antarctica.
