Northern Patagonia Photo Tour is a unique experience where you'll explore Chile's Aysén Region and capture the stunning landscapes of Patagonia in autumn. During this season, Patagonian forests transform into a palette of vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows, creating a spectacular contrast with the region's turquoise lakes, crystal-clear rivers, and imposing glaciers. On this tour, we will take the time to explore and capture the essence of this still little-visited corner of the world.
Patagonia
Patagonia is one of the last places on Earth where nature remains the true protagonist. Located at the southernmost tip of South America, this region is a sanctuary of pristine landscapes and unique biodiversity. The majestic Andes Mountains serve as its backbone, dividing the area into two main regions: Western Patagonia, mainly Chilean territory, and Eastern Patagonia, mostly part of the Argentina Republic.
In Chilean Patagonia, ancient glaciers and deep fjords dominate the landscape. The region features a narrow coastal plain that gives way to imposing ice fields, mountains, archipelagos, and an endless network of crystal-clear lakes. From active volcanoes to the vast Magellanic tundra, every corner of Chilean Patagonia offers a unique experience.
One of the most fascinating aspects of this region is its diverse ecosystems. Depending on the area you visit, you may encounter lush forests, arid steppes, glistening glaciers, or even the frozen lands stretching toward the legendary Cape Horn. This variety not only makes Patagonia a must-visit destination for nature lovers, but also a living laboratory for studies about the flora and fauna’s adaptations to extreme conditions.
Autumn: A Spectacle of Colors
Each season in Patagonia offers unique experiences, shaped by variations in temperature, humidity, and vegetation. However, autumn in Northern Patagonia is truly breathtaking, as the vibrant colors and dramatic contrasts create an unforgettable atmosphere.
During this season, the forests of lenga (Nothofagus pumilio) and ñirre (Nothofagus antarctica) trees are adorned in shades of red and gold, transforming the landscape into a natural masterpiece.
The fresh, crisp air, filled with the scent of damp earth and fallen leaves, invites you to immerse yourself in the essence of this wild paradise.
In this setting, the low, golden sunlight reflects off the mountains, lakes, and valleys, enveloping the environment in a warm glow. Every corner of this remote Patagonian territory becomes an invitation to contemplation, where nature offers moments of serenity and wonder.
Laguna San Rafael and Its Calving Glacier
The catamaran journey to Laguna San Rafael will take you through a network of glacial fjords, covered by dense evergreen forests, dominated by coihue and winter’s bark. Upon arrival, we will get up close to the magnificent San Rafael Glacier, where we will also search for the elusive leopard seal. This glacier, part of the Northern Patagonian Ice Field, has been in retreat for many decades due to global warming, with and accelerated loss mass in recent years. Witnessing its colossal blue ice walls and hearing the thunderous crashes of calving ice is a powerful reminder of the dynamic nature of glacial ecosystems.
General Carrera Lake and the Marble Caves
General Carrera Lake, the largest in Chile and shared with Argentina, is a true geological wonder. Its intensely turquoise waters result from light refracting through suspended rock particles, a product of glacial erosion. Along its shores lie the spectacular Marble Caves, declared a Natural Sanctuary in June 1994.
Exploradores Valley: A Natural Laboratory
From Puerto Río Tranquilo, we venture into Exploradores Valley, a natural laboratory. Known for its waterfalls and lush vegetation, this valley is part of a biological corridor that connects Andean ecosystems with the temperate rainforests of the Pacific coast. Its proximity to the Northern Patagonian Ice Field allows for the observation of glacial moraines, silent witnesses to the ice’s advance and retreat over thousands of years. In autumn, the valley turns colorful, from the deep reds of the lenga trees to the golden hues of the ñirres (Nothofagus antarctica).
Patagonia National Park: The Steppe in Its Purest Form
Continuing south along the legendary Carretera Austral, we reach the newly established Patagonia National Park. Located in the Chacabuco Valley, this region presents a dramatic shift in landscape, where dense forests give way to the Patagonian steppe. Here, wildlife takes center stage: guanacos, foxes, and Andean condors soar overhead, while nearby wetlands attract a rich diversity of bird species. The park also preserves remnants of ancient volcanic eruptions, visible in its basalt formations and vast plains of solidified lava.
The Mighty Baker River
Our journey takes us to the Baker River, Chile’s most voluminous river and one of the most photographed in Patagonia. Its deep blue waters, fed by the melting ice of the Patagonian Ice Fields, wind through canyons and glacial valleys, creating breathtaking landscapes. Its hydrological dynamics have been subject of numerous studies due to its ecological significance and the controversy about hydroelectric projects in the region.
