Pre-Dawn Departure: Your private vehicle collects you from your Puerto Natales accommodation or Torres del Paine hotel before sunrise. During the scenic transfer to Laguna Amarga Ranch, your naturalist-tracker guide provides essential orientation on puma behavior, tracking protocols, optimal photography techniques, and the day’s strategic approach.
Field Operations (6-7 hours): Upon arrival at the exclusive Laguna Amarga territories, your intensive tracking program begins. The session structure—whether divided into distinct morning and afternoon periods or conducted as one continuous operation—responds dynamically to multiple factors:
• Real-time puma location intelligence from the ranch radio network
• Active puma behavior (hunting, territorial marking, family interactions, resting)
• Weather conditions and optimal lighting for observation and photography
• Quality and duration of encounters (extended sightings receive priority)
• Participant preferences and physical comfort
• Your naturalist-tracker maintains constant radio communication with the estancia’s observation team, positioning your group where puma activity is confirmed. The flexible format allows your guide to adapt strategy throughout the day, maximizing your encounter probability and observation quality.
Packed lunch: During field days, our naturalist guides will prepare and serve snacks and drinks in the field.
Return Transfer: Following your field session completion—or earlier if you prefer—your private vehicle returns you to your Puerto Natales or Torres del Paine accommodation. Transfer time provides opportunity to review the day’s photography, discuss observed behaviors with your guide, and receive recommendations for additional Patagonian exploration.
Conservation Foundation
This program operates within Estancia Laguna Amarga’s pioneering conservation framework, where puma protection drives sustainable land management. Through collaborative partnerships with Torres del Paine authorities and regional ranchers, the ranch maintains critical habitat connectivity for the world’s densest wild puma population.
Your participation directly funds these conservation initiatives, demonstrating the economic value of ethical puma ecotourism and creating sustainable alternatives to traditional ranching conflicts. Every expedition contributes to habitat protection, behavioral research, and community education programs transforming human-puma coexistence throughout Chilean Patagonia.
