Among birds, few families are as appealing and command such interest as penguins. The King Penguin, Aptenodytes patagonicus, is the second largest species of penguin after the Emperor and certainly one of the most colorful and attractive members of the group.
Few places in the world offer good access and chances to see them in the wild, making this, the only continental American breeding colony, a very special one indeed.
Up to date, the Marazzi River colony is over a hundred strong and expected to keep growing, as a new cohort of chicks has managed to survive in the last few years.
Adults have a remarkable musical trumpeting call uttered with the bill pointing skywards, while young birds whistle for attention from their parents. Their main food in the Straits of Magellan is Patagonian Squid, Loligo gahi.
