Estancia Caleta Josefina is the name of a huge estancia (sheep ranch) located in the northern part of Isla Grande (Big Island) of Tierra del Fuego, in southern Chile. This former ranch was just huge in surface, comprising more than 1 million hectares / +2 million acres of steppe/scrub wind-swept country; over 300 workers were part of the busy sheep operation which started in 1893.
Nowadays, some of the centenary buildings of Estancia Caleta Josefina have been refurbished like the manager’s house, which is now the very lodge we use during some of our trips in Tierra del Fuego. We love the ambiance of this historic pioneer home. The lodge has eight spacious rooms, each one with private en-suite facilities and a fire place. After our activities in the field, while photographing penguins or doing bird-watching, we will relax, compile our checklist or edit photos at its lovely living room. The lodge offer simple and traditional food; it’s likely we will enjoy roasted lamb and a glass or two of an excellent Chilean wine. As you can see, the place is cozy and small, and you will feel like at home here. Carlos Rohers, the lodge manager, does very well in receiving his guests and show the best hospitality of the area.
