Day 1 • Lima – Pantanos de Villa
Upon arrival at Lima International airport, you will be greeted by one of our representatives, who will give you your arrival kit, your travel details, reconfirmations, coordinate any last minute changes and transfer you to your hotel and assist you with check-in and with your baggage.
Lima, the Spanish Vice-Royal capital of South America, is home to some of the most remarkable colonial mansions, churches, and squares on the continent. The cosmopolitan districts of San Isidro, Barranco, and Miraflores offer a great variety of museums, restaurants, and shopping opportunities.
During the afternoon we will visit Pantanos de Villa, a surprising marshland hideaway tucked in the suburbs of Lima, in the district of Chorrillos. It is a 396-hectare protected zone, internationally recognized as a very important wetland for aquatic birds. Pantanos de Villa is the perfect place for birders and nature enthusiasts Ð with more than 178 species of birds, 67 plant species, freshwater fishes, reptiles, and rodents. This is a great introduction to lowland aquatic and coastal seabirds.
The specialties of the marshland are particularly Least Bittern, Many-coloured Rush Tyrant, Wren-like Rushbird, Plumbeous Rail, Peruvian Thick-knee and Peruvian Meadowlark. We hope to find a fair diversity of waterfowl such as White-cheeked Pintail, Cinnamon Teal, Little Blue Heron and Andean Duck, and seabirds like Grey-hooded Gull. We will scan the grassy fields looking for Yellowish Pipit and Grassland Yellow-Finch. The surrounding coastline is also very productive and we will have great chances of finding several specialties of the Humboldt Current including Peruvian Pelican and Peruvian Booby, Inca Tern, as well as Kelp, Grey, Band-tailed and FranklinÕs gulls.

Day 2 • Lima – Flight to Puerto Maldonado – Reserva Amazonica
At proper time you will be transferred to the airport to board your flight to Puerto Maldonado (1.5 hours). It is important that you bring only necessary clothing and equipment to the lodge. Due to weight and space limitations on the boat, we must limit passengersÕ luggage to only 10 kg. (22 lbs.) per person. Storage is available at Inkaterra Butterfly House, near Puerto Maldonado airport.
You will soon be arriving to Puerto Maldonado, the gateway to one of the most remote and extraordinary rainforests in the world. Your journey will take you into the heart of Tambopata National Park, in the Amazon basin, where you will experience the magnificent beauty, sounds, scents, colors and the solitude of the tropical rainforest. Check-in at Inkaterra Butterfly House near the airport and in only 15 minutes you will be reaching the pier by the river.
Peru boasts the greatest diversity of butterflies in the world, with 3,700 known species. Many of these can be seen at the Butterfly House, a showcase for the variety, beauty and adaptability of these fascinating insects.
Begin to experience the enchantment of the rainforest as you take a 45-minute boat ride along the Madre de Dios River to arrive at Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica lodge and its 10,000 ha-private ecological reserve. After a short briefing, settle into your beautiful Ôcaba–aÕ (cabin) and enjoy your lunch in the dining room. Share a refreshing tea time and get ready for the afternoon excursion. On your first day, we recommend a guided walk along the trail system where you will start discovering the overwhelming biodiversity of the Amazon Basin. This trail offers an excellent introduction to the rainforest environment, winding past impressive trees such as the Shihuahuaco, and the strangely beautiful Strangler Fig.
In terms of birds we will see a great variety, both along the river and on the trails (locally known as ÔtrochasÕ); some species we expect to see are Undulated Tinamou, Orinoco Goose, Plumbeous Kite, Greater Ani, Pale-vented Pigeon, Bluish-fronted Jacamar, Chestnut-fronted Macaw, White-eyed Parakeet, Black-fronted Nunbird, Sapphire-spangled Emerald, Rufous-breasted Hermit, Pale-legged Hornero, Black-faced Antthrush, Drab Water Tyrant, Short-crested Flycatcher, Straight-billed Woodcreeper, Tropical Kingbird, White-winged Swallow, Red-capped Cardinal and Silver-beaked Tanager.
On this first night, we also recommend the River-by-Night excursion Ñ a guided boat ride downriver from the lodge. Witness the transformation from a diurnal to a nocturnal world: animals and birds of the daytime give way to species specially adapted to the night. As you enjoy their paradise, you will learn about their habits, while you search for nightjars, owls, capybaras and big caimans.

Day 3 ¥ Reserva Amazonica
Breakfast begins at 5:30 a.m. for those who want to avoid the heat and enjoy nature at its fullest.ÊThis morning we will explore an extraordinary habitat, the canopy of the Amazon rainforests. In order to do that, we will take a 15-minute walk along the trail towards the Inkaterra Canopy Walkway Interpretation Center. A short briefing will be given about the project history, structure and the highlights of this extraordinary facility. You will ascend the first tower and walk through the treetops of the giant Amazon Basin, across hanging bridges. Views unimaginable from below and possible only from the air, are revealed on this network of towers, bridges and platforms. Be on the lookout for different birds of the jungle, such as toucans, woodpeckers, trogons, among many others, or try to identify them from the observation decks by their songs. Learn about the interrelationship of the flora and fauna at the various levels of the forest and its integration into the jungle ecosystem.
The bird diversity of this rainforest ecosystem is at times simply overwhelming. The list of potential species is quite large and includes an impressive cast: Red-stained Woodpecker, White-throated Woodpecker, Gilded Barbet, Mealy Parrot, Blue-and-yellow Macaw, Curl-crested Aracari, Violaceous Trogon, Cobalt-winged Parakeet, Cinnamon-throated Woodcreeper, White-winged Piprites, Thrush-like Wren, Red Tityra, Green-and-gold Tanager, and Golden-bellied Euphonia. There are also good chances of seeing family groups of Colombian Red Howler Monkey. After the Canopy Walkway,Êwe will take the interesting ‘Anaconda’ trail to explore the birds related to the interesting flooded habitat of the Aguajal (a local jungle palm tree). We hope to see here Bar-breasted Piculet, Chestnut Woodpecker, Purus Jacamar, Band-tailed Antbird, Dusky-capped Flycatcher, Point-tailed Palmcreeper, Fork-tailed Palm Swift, Turquoise Tanager, and Palm Tanager.
Take a restoring shower and have dinner in the main restaurant from 7:30 p.m. After dinner, you may retire early to your own caba–a or join us to talk about the experience of life in the rainforest, as you listen to the intriguing sounds of the jungle at night.

Day 4 ¥ Lake Sandoval Ð Reserva Amazonica
This morning visit the Sandoval Lake. A 30-minute boat ride takes you to the Tambopata National Reserve, where wildlife surrounds you as you enjoy the one-and-a-half hour walk along three kilometers of trails to reach Lake Sandoval. Glide in a wooden canoe, across a beautiful, mirror-like oxbow lake that is home to the endangered Giant River Otter, as well as Red Howler Monkeys, macaws, the prehistoric Hoatzin, also called ÒshanshoÓ, anacondas, and side-neck turtles.
Among the potential bird species we may see Grey-necked Wood Rail, Grey-fronted Dove, Blue-headed Macaw, Dusky-headed Parakeet, Ladder-tailed Nightjar, Ringed Kingfisher, Chestnut-capped Puffbird, White-bellied Spinetail, Chestnut-tailed Antbird, Bamboo Antshrike, Plumbeous Antbird, White-flanked Antwren, Spotted Tody-Flycatcher, Little Ground Tyrant, River Tyrannulet, Large-headed Flatbill, Hauxwell’s and Black-billed thrushes, Russet-backed Oropendola, Black-masked Tityra and Blue-grey Tanager.
During the afternoon, we will have anÊenjoyable walk to Gamitana Amazon Model Farm to learn more about sustainable and organic agriculture practices.

Day 5 ¥ Puerto Maldonado Ð Flight to Cusco Ð Machu Picchu
After breakfast you will take the boat ride along the Madre de Dios River back to Puerto Maldonado; you will be assisted for your flight to Cusco, the mythic Inca Empire Capital.ÊUpon arrival at Cusco airport you will be greeted by one of our representatives for a private transfer to Ollantaytambo train station to board your train to Machu Picchu.
On the way to Ollantaytambo, you will visit the Pisac village and its traditional market; the people of the highlands come down to exchange their products such as vegetables, weavings and pottery, for essentials such as salt, sugar and rice in a trade called ‘trueque’.ÊYou will have a brief stop in Ollantaytambo, the oldest continuously occupied settlement in the Americas, which shows the best surviving example of Inca city planning. Its fortress, with its extremely well built walls, was both a temple and a fortress to the Incas. The spectacular steep terraces that guard the Inca complex mark one of the few places where the Conquerors lost a major battle. The temple area is at the top of steep terracing, which helped to provide excellent defenses. Stones used for these buildings were brought from a quarry high up on the opposite side of the Urubamba River – an incredible feat involving the efforts of thousands of workers.
At proper time, you will be transferred to Ollantaytambo train station. It is important that you bring only necessary clothing and equipment to Machu Picchu. Due to the train companyÕs weight rules they limit passengers’ luggage to only 5 kg. (11 lbs.) per person. Storage is available at Inkaterra La Casona.
Upon arrival in Machu Picchu village (Aguas Calientes), you will be greeted by one of our hotel representatives who will assist you with your luggage and escort you to Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel,Êa rustic boutique hotel in the heart of the Machu Picchu Historical Sanctuary. Cozy whitewashed cottages constructed from local materials line the stone pathways, giving this intimate 85-room, suite and villa hotel the look of a lovely Andean village.ÊCheck-in in your Casita where hotel services will be explained and where you will plan activities on the hotel grounds, spa treatments and other services.
In the afternoon, relax trying a de-stress massage in our Unu Spa. This massage helps de-stress the body and restores physical, mental and emotional balance. Day 6 ¥ Machu Picchu
Today we will visit one of the world’s most iconic and impressive places, the citadel ofÊMachu Picchu. After a short walk to the bus station, we will take a 25-minute bus ride from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu. Here we will have around 5 full hours to explore all the highlights of the citadel on a private guided visit to the ruins and surroundings, and receiving thorough interpretation on this enigmatic site, re-discovered only 100 years ago by American explorer Hiram Bingham.
During the afternoon, you Êmay participate in some of our selection of excursions within the hotel grounds and learn about the unique cloud forest environment. You have the following menu of programmed excursions and activities:
¥ Orchid Walk Ð Walk through the orchid garden (372 species), the worldÕs largest collection of native orchid species in their natural setting within a private facility (American Orchid Society); to observe some of the orchids in bloom (best orchid season between mid-october and April). Discover this extraordinary plant family, which has captured the human imagination for centuries. From the largest orchid flower in the world to species new to science that have been discovered on the hotel grounds, some of them only visible through a magnifying glass.
¥ÊNature Walk Ð Walk along the hotelÕs trails, visiting the Rocotal Observatory, sacred pre-Inca pictographs and an enchanting waterfall. Discover the fascinating yet fragile ecosystem of the Machu Picchu cloud forest and learn about its many endemic plants and animals.
¥ Tea Plantation – Visit our organic tea (Camellia sinensis) plantation and tea house to discover the wonders of the traditional tea making process. Take part as the freshly picked leaves are pressed over wooden blocks and finally seal your own tea bag. A glass of fresh iced-tea from the Tea House at the hotel lobby completes the experience.

Day 7 ¥ Machu Picchu
Today we will have an early start to take advantage of the optimum time for a cloud-forest bird watching tour. You will be able to observe some of the 192 registered species, of which 18 are hummingbirds. Among the impressive potential species we may find today are Torrent Duck, Andean Guan, the stunning Andean Cock-of-the-rock, Golden-headed Quetzal, Green-and-white Hummingbird, andÊWhite-capped Dipper.
In the afternoon, you may enjoy the eco activities offered by the hotel or explore the town of Aguas Calientes or just relax and enjoy some of the hotelÕs most charming attractions: the reading room, the wall in the main dining room displaying scores of pre- Columbian artifacts and the loungeÕs crackling fireplaces.

Day 8 ¥ Machu Picchu Ð Flight to Lima Ð End of the tour
At proper time, be assisted to the Machu Picchu pueblo (Aguas Calientes) train station to board your train back to Ollantaytambo. Meeting on arrival at the train station and transfer to the airport where you will have assistance for your returning flight to Lima, where the trip ends.

To book this tour, please complete our online registration form. We will process your booking form and will send you (within 24 hours) a note with space confirmation and a deposit invoice with payment instructions. The deposit amount is US$ 500Êper person.ÊFull payment of the tour fee is due 90 days prior to tour departure.
NOTE: Inquires received on Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays will be replied during the following working day.

Cancellation Policy
Notice of cancellation can only be accepted IN WRITING from the person who signed the booking form and takes effect on the day such noticed is received by us.

Refunds are made according to the following schedule:
If cancellation is made 120 days or more before departure date, the deposit less US$ 200 is refundable.
If cancellation is made between 120 and 60 days before departure, the deposit is not refundable, but any payments covering the balance of the fee will be refunded.
If cancellation is made past 60 days before departure date, no refund is available.
This policy and fee schedule also applies to pre-trip and post trip extensions, as well as any transfers from one tour to another. We strongly recommend the purchase of trip cancellation insurance to protect yourself.
