Penguins of Magdalena Island. Join us on this extraordinary adventure to discover the breeding colony of Magellanic Penguins at Magdalena Island, in the Magellan Straits, southern Chile.
This brief trip is suitable for nature enthusiasts as well as wildlife photographers of all levels of skills. During this wildlife adventure, you will have the guidance of one of our naturalist guides as well as private transfers from your hotel to the embarkation sites; however, this is not a private trip, we will share the boat(s) with other guests and groups.
We will sail out from Laredo Bay (20km north of Punta Arenas) bound for Magdalena Island, in the waters of the mythical Straits of Magellan, in Chilean Patagonia. This protected area holds a huge Magellanic Penguin colony of more than 28,000 individuals. Besides the penguins, several other species of seabirds such as Imperial and Rock Cormorants, Dolphin and Kelp Gulls, Chilean Skua and South American Tern nest here. We will be able to land at Magdalena and walk the well-marked loop trail up to its historic lighthouse.
We will also visit the small Marta Island, just a few miles away from Magdalena. There is here a fairly large rookery of South American Sea Lion, comprising all ages and sizes, from playful juveniles to massive bulls. At times, rare visitors such as Southern Elephant Seal and even Leopard Seal can be seen resting on the rugged coast. Snowy Sheathbills often occur here, attending the noisy sea lion colony searching for food. Penguins of Magdalena Island.
This boat trip is highly dependent on the weather conditions, particularly wind. The Coast Guard Authority may cancel or postpone the schedule departure, if it is too windy; consequently there is some degree of cancellation risk during the operation season (October to March).
Our Penguins of Magdalena Island trip can be easily combined with our Condors of Patagonia half day trip. If you are interested in that possibility of seeing some of the most iconic wildlife of Patagonia, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
