Full day cultural and nature tour exploring the surroundings of Punta Arenas, Chile’s southernmost city. We will focus on the places visited by Charles Darwin and Bruce Chatwin, two great personalities who felt fascination about the natural history and culture of Patagonia. Comprehensive visit to Port Famine and San Juan Bay, where we will revisit the history of the HMS Beagle and the explorations carried out by the young Darwin, Fitz Roy and many other famous explorers. On our interesting visit to the “Park of the Strait of Magellan”, we’ll learn why this exact place at the almost end of the world is so important for the territorial development of the Republic of Chile.
On this day trip from Punta Arenas, Chile, we will follow the footsteps of two remarkable explorers who discovered the remote landscapes of Patagonia in different times and pursuing very different goals. Charles Darwin was the young naturalist aboard the HMS Beagle and while in Patagonia, he was about to begin to understand the variety of landscapes of South America and its rich and contrasting wildlife. On the other hand, Bruce Chatwin was the adventurer and writer who supplied with a rucksack and his hiking boots began a true journey of discovery to this part of the world, which ended with the completion of his famed travelogue “In Patagonia”, considered by many as a “little masterpiece of travel, history and adventure”.
The shores of the Strait of Magellan are home to many different birds species, such as Ringed Kingfisher, Steamer Duck, Ruddy-headed Goose, and many more. In the water, we might also spot some dolphins or even whales.
