Ushuaia nature tour. Full day nature and photo journey to the famed Beagle Channel, in southern Tierra del Fuego. On this trip we will follow the wake of Charles Darwin and Captain Robert Fitz Roy’s Beagle and its survey of the area in the 1830s. We will visit sea lion and seabird breeding colonies, including cormorants and penguins. The highlight of the trip will be Estancia Harberton, a historic location that will tell us about the origins of the ill-fated early inhabitants of the island and the first ‘white’ pioneers that colonized this remote part of the world.

Detailed Itinerary and Activities
Ushuaia nature tour. We have a full day of adventures ahead! We will start our trip in the morning from the port of Ushuaia, world’s southernmost city, by boarding a spacious vessel to travel along a considerable part of the Argentinian sector of the famed Beagle Channel. The boat has a large cabin with a warm seating area; this will give us protection as we will spend a fair amount of time watching wildlife from the viewing decks; we strongly recommend to bring cold-weather gear including a coat/parka, hat and gloves. A short distance from Ushuaia, we will reach the productive Les Eclerairs islets; these rocks hold a fairly large colony of Sea Lions and Fur Seals as well as rookeries of several seabirds such as Imperial Cormorant, Chilean Skua, Kelp Gull and South American Tern. We will circumnavigate this rocks teeming with wildlife to appreciate the imposing and colorful lighthouse.
As we travel eastwards, there are great chances o spotting Peale’s Dolphin and pelagic seabirds including Back-browed Albatross, Southern Giant Petrel and Magellanic Diving-Petrel. Later, we will get to Martillo Island and its penguin breeding colonies. Here we will have the unique chance of seeing Magellanic and Gentoo Penguins breeding together; Occasionally King Penguins can be seen resting among its smaller cousins.

By noontime, we will reach the sheltered bay of Estancia Harberton. This fascinating site holds an amazing part of the history (and pre-history) of southern Tierra del Fuego. The history of missionary Thomas Bridges and his family and the connection with the last Fuegians, the natives of Tierra del Fuego, is certainly moving and you can learn more by reading before-hand one of the most inspiring account written by his son Lucas on the classic “Uttermost Part of the Earth”. We will have plenty of time to explore the facilities of this farm, the cemetery and the visitor center, which contains a interesting museum with a large collection of marine mammal skulls and skeletons. We will head back to Ushuaia by bus, enjoying the mountains, the sea views and the tall beech forests which cover this part of the island.
