A tasting of Merlot and Sauvignon in Chile’s Colchagua Valley and the rich Malbec and Tempranillo in Argentina’s western Mendoza region and, oh 170+ birds that you can see quite easily between the Mediterranean type coast across the Andean uplands and into Mendoza’s valleys, scrubland and wetlands and there you have it! An amazingly rewarding and colourful tapestry of wines, birds (and other wildlife) and beautiful landscapes that appeal to so many senses all at once. One moment you are observing birds like Guira Cuckoos and Striped Woodpeckers and the next you are tucking into a very pleasant Malbec or Merlot in relaxing, warm surroundings. Win win!
The holiday organised expertly by Far South Expeditions also provided a very good cross-section of the culture of both countries and a chance to learn something of their chequered history especially since independence approximately 200 years years ago. Add to this a fascinating visit to the coastal home of Chile’s great national poet, Pablo Neruda, and opportunities in the evenings to look around the towns of Santa Cruz and Mendoza and you begin to get more than a glimpse into the more relaxed way of life in these provincial towns.
The hotels and lodges we overnighted in were of a very high standard and the hosting staff helpful, friendly and welcoming. Again the food was always very varied, well prepared and tasty, and all the room facilities were top quality. The guiding, balance and pace of the tour in terms of birding and other wildlife watching, and wine tasting worked very well and there were very few moments when there was nothing of interest to see, taste and absorb.
This is an excellent holiday for the wildlife traveller who wants to extend his or her wildlife and wine knowledge and appreciation in southern South America.
I shall certainly return.
