At Far South Expeditions, every expedition is an opportunity to experience the extraordinary wildlife of Patagonia up close! Over the years, our naturalist guides and puma trackers have had the incredible privilege of witnessing the behavior of these elusive felines in their natural habitat. We are thrilled to announce the launch of The Fang Project, an initiative that will transform our daily observations into accessible and valuable knowledge for the world.
The Origins of the Fang Project
The inspiration behind The Fang Project stems from a unique reality: our constant presence in the field, year-round. Our team is made up of experienced puma trackers and naturalist guides who work tirelessly alongside our travelers, documenting puma sightings and behaviors in the heart of Patagonia, specifically at Estancia Laguna Amarga.
We’re thrilled to share that, thanks to this incredible opportunity, we’ve decided to take things a step further: turning constant observation into a valuable tool for data collection. This new stage represents our firm commitment to understand more the biology and ecology of the puma population in the area, and to share this information with the nature lovers, conservationists, and the scientific community around the world.
Our Methodology: Look closely, but don’t interfere!
The Fang Project is based on three methodological pillars: direct observation, photography, and audiovisual recordings. This non-invasive approach allows us to study pumas without disturbing them, respecting their space while collecting crucial data for their study and conservation.
Our team is dedicated to collecting daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly data on the pumas. Thanks to our field experience and constant presence, we have the opportunity to gather real and relevant data on their presence and behaviors at Estancia Laguna Amarga.
What Are We Studying?
The primary objective of The Fang Project is to conduct a comprehensive study of puma behavior in their natural habitat. Our approach encompasses three fundamental areas of research:
Predator-prey dynamics: We’ll analyze the complex relationship between pumas and their main prey, especially the guanaco.
Puma-human interaction: We’ll evaluate how these cats respond to human presence, including the impact of wildlife tourism in the area.
Puma-guanaco-human relationships: We’ll explore the interaction between these three key players in the Patagonian ecosystem.
To ensure data quality and consistency, our team will receive specialized training in feline behavior and field methodologies. This training will equip us with the knowledge to implement standardized protocols, ensuring that each record contributes to our understanding of these remarkable predators.
Check out the amazing real-time results!
We firmly believe that knowledge should be accessible. Therefore, we will share our findings, photographs, and videos through our digital platforms, allowing a global audience to follow The Fang Project progress in near real time. You will be able to follow the stories of the pumas from anywhere in the world. Follow us on Instagram!
