Fly Fishing & Birding Parque Futangue. The perfect place to relax, hidden away in a little corner of paradise in Northern Patagonia. Futangue Hotel & Spa stands out for its native wood interiors and incredible views across to mountain ranges and waterfalls. This is the point from which to set out and explore the wilderness of the Patagonian Andes and to where you can return again, to unwind and enjoy the Spa, after a day of adventure.
In the meadows closest to Lake Ranco, you will find our Hotel & Spa. The architecture highlights the region’s native wood and complements the natural environment, assimilating the classic barns and stables of the south of Chile. The decoration uses ethnic fabrics and colorful textiles, which are inspired by national artists and objects from the Mapuche culture. The local traditions and natural heritage are present in every nook and cranny.
Casa Exploradores sits just 120 meters from the Hotel, where you can enjoy the same exclusive service from the Hotel but in a more private and secluded environment. Both buildings share the El Mesón del Caulle restaurant, which is located in the main part of the Hotel. The Spa facilities are also shared.
Futangue Hotel & Spa invites guests to discover this stunning, wild, private reserve, while still being able to enjoy pleasant and cozy accommodation. Come and explore the beauty of Parque Futangue, in the Patagonian Andes!
Fly Fishing & Birding Parque Futangue at Futangue Private Reserve
4 days, 3 nights
Fly Fishing & Birding Parque Futangue. A pristine jewel set in the middle of a native forest-covered amphitheater, hiding a reservoir for wild trout, close to perfection.” These are the words of Chile’s angling pioneer, Adrián Dufflocq, describing the scenery where guests can fly fish in Futangue Nature Park. An outdoor journey that has to be experienced to be believed. The park and its surrounding areas offer world-class fly fishing, for rainbow and brown trout and also for salmon like Coho, Chinook and Salar. The combination of privacy, excellent connectivity and quality accommodation is difficult to find in other destinations, in addition to the fact that most of the waters we fish have limited access to only a few fishermen.
The Hotel and the Park are surrounded by a privileged hydrographic system. Our programs involve fishing a variety of waters in beautiful lakes and streams inside the Park, relatively close to the Hotel; also we fish other rivers and lakes in the area, never more than one-hour’s beautiful car drive away, or even closer. We have exclusive access to most of the waters we fish, where you will be fishing in complete solitude, in the middle of breathtaking natural landscapes. Our trout season opens the second Friday of November, and closes the first Sunday of May. We especially recommend the periods of November through to mid-January and March to April. These are the best times to fish for trout in Chile. We fish with streamers, wet flies and nymphs during the early season, (from roughly November until the first week in December.) Our dry fly fishing starts in the last week of November, with hatches of insects reaching a peak by Christmas and continuing through January. Although nymph fishing is available all day, we prefer the early mornings and particularly evenings, around and after sunset. At the lakes with reeds in the Park, nymph fishing is very prolific. We like casting dry flies during the evening rise. Then we can spot the larger trout (usually next to the banks with overhanging vegetation)…not easy spots, but if you manage to present the fly properly, the reward is a good strike. We fish like this until late in the evening; then return to the hotel for cocktails and dinner. The hotel is located in a beautiful setting inside the Park. It has all the conveniences for a relaxed vacation with first class service and a fantastic Spa. Hospitality is a tradition in our country, and our staff will assist in every possible way in order to make your stay a landmark of a memorable visit to Chile.
Fly-fishing excursions
On their arrival, guests will be briefed by their angler’s guide, while shown around the premises. Fish for a while in some of the waters near the hotel or practice at the hotel’s casting lawn. The fishing programs have been designed to enable you to fish in different locations every day. Depending on the weather conditions, the excursions to the rivers and lakes can be arranged in a sequence according to your preferences, your guide’s experience or both. You can choose, between full day excursions with lunch included or two half day excursions, returning to the hotel for lunch after the first excursion and leaving again in the afternoon. We recommend a minimum stay of three nights, in order to make the most of the many fly fishing spots, both inside and outside the reserve. It is possible to add two half-day fishing excursions at no additional cost: one on the first day and a second one on the last day, depending on the time of arrival and departure of the guests. Pichi Lake
A surprising drive through the native forest bordering the impressive Riñinahue River, will take the anglers to Pichi Lake; a trout fishing dream-come-true, which started six decades ago, when rainbow trout were introduced there. Ideally this excursion should be planned for a whole day; however it is possible to return to the hotel for lunch and continue the fishing during the evening.

Los Coipos Lake
The guests will be driven to fish at the hidden Los Coipos Lake, smaller than Pichi Lake, it also has an interesting population of wild brown and rainbow trout. A picnic will be served at lunchtime on a lovely pier with beautiful views. (No one else is there; just the guests and the surrounding, virgin, untouched native forest.) There is a trail that climbs over the ridge and it is a fantastic experience and a photographer’s paradise.

Pitreño Lake
Another small lake at 3400 feet/ 1040 meters. Getting there is a true adventure, because there is no road suitable for cars. After leaving the car, we drive for 25 minutes on quad bike. The landscape is extraordinary and the area is incredibly isolated. The only sounds are the breeze through the forests and the birdsong, except once in a while, the screaming of your reel as well! The “Pitreño Lake” has crystal clear water and excellent stocks of both rainbow and brown trout. For this excursion, arrangements must be made in advance.

Calcurrupe River
The Calcurrupe River empties the Maihue Lake into Lake Ranco. The structure of this unique river makes it one of the most attractive trout rivers in the world. Crystal clear waters with rapids and pools make up one of the most legendary rivers of the angling world. There are brown and rainbow trout and occasionally during the Autumn, a few Chinook salmon. Often these fish grow to trophy sizes due to the incredible amount of food available. The anglers will fish the river by boat with expert boatmen and in many places it’s possible to wade. The Calcurrupe River has special regulations to protect the quality of the fisheries.

Huishue Lake
This neighboring private reserve in the foot hills of the Andes Mountains, has abundant fishing opportunities. Here, anglers might try their luck at catching a trophy, due to the amazing sizes, wiliness and quantity of rainbow and brown trout that live in the lake. From the boat you can see huge waterfalls and impressive granite towers.

Riñinahue River
The place where the river meets the lake is quite open, surrounded by beaches and a good place for wading. The bottom is mainly gravel and sand. This is one of the classic “boca fishing” spots, where the cruising trout feed around the plume of the current as it enters the lake. Long and accurate casts are required to cover the water. It is one of the most challenging spots in the area, and many trophy trout are caught here. The background scenery is the beautiful Ranco Lake with its many islands and some high mountains at the southern side.
